Special

I had a yen to teach again
but that MVA put paid
to all the plans and pretty schemes
my ambitious heart had laid.

They classed me 'unemployable',
couldn't take that lying down,
made enquiries for further study,
I was heading out of town.

Twenty years or more had passed
since I'd written an essay.
Here, at the university
I churned them out each day.

Four years down the part-time track,
disability notwithstanding,
graduated with B.Ed.
and a job I was now demanding.

You see I'd found a 'special ' field
in which there is a dearth.
There are insufficient 'special' teachers
anywhere on earth.

Within two months I was offered
a job in a seaside town.
We'd have to move again...buy hey!
I'd got my cap and gown.

Back to school for me was great,
though my body was battered and broken
I could be an influence on young lives;
literacy...late, but awoken.

After just two years in their employ,
this 'unemployable' teacher they bid...
full leave, full pay to study full time
for the Masters degree (which I did).

I'm finished now, retired and done.
In all there are no regrets.
Horton hatched his egg just fine
and an elephant never forgets.

Glossary (if you need it)
B.Ed...Bachelor of Education
MVA...motor vehicle accident
