Wrong October Night
Hovering around a bubbling caldron,
within the circle, the coven
uttered indecipherable words,
a vocabulary known only
to those touched by the wand of black.
Swaying to and fro, in a mesmerized trance,
each one added to the flow of the chant.
Some sounded as though growling while
others shrieked to curdle blood.
Incredibly heated vapors escaped,
inundating all in a mist of methodical magic.
The scene cut deeply into the core of my being
as I watched quietly, fearing ultimate exposure.
Incantations swelled and deepened the look of ugly
on these purveyors of nefarious spells.
Now, I was even afraid to swallow, for to do so
would surely give me up.
So completely entranced were they now
that their eyes rolled back into their heads,
white was all one could see, very disconcerting.
Trapped, I was definitely trapped in my vantage point,
for even the slightest crackle of a twig
would signal my certain and undeniable demise.
The scene playing out before me blended
an olio of fear and tittering curiosity, how odd.
It also served to remind me of my faith,
as I found myself furiously praying
to make it through this night…..
