A Hobos' Lullaby
Cardboard tents a boxcars' corner, |
so his body can fit inside.
Newspapers cover a weary face
to help him rest and hide.
Some nights he is able to leave the rails,
escaping in a peaceful sleep.
A special dream often brings him a song
that his mind will always keep.
Last night he was able to visit them,
as they rocked in a favorite chair.
Dawns' cruel light snatched them away
and the song disappeared in the air.
When they come to see him, he's happy,
but wakes up confused and sad.
Last night she said, soon he'll be with them
and relive the good times they had.
Crawling from the box, he took a big drink,
time to give life one more try.
Tonight, she just might sing him a song,
'a hobos' lullaby'.
