As I Lay Dyin'

As I lay dyin', nearly dead,
I felt a presence by my bed.
I opened an eye, only one,
To show I wasn't dead and gone.
T'was the village pastor standin' there
He took my hand as he took a chair.
He leaned toward me with a little bow,
A look of concern upon his brow.
He asked me if I been troubled by sin
Was there somethin’ I needed to tell him, then?
Life’s been hard but been a joy…
Wanted to say 'I been a good boy!'
I told him, “Sir, I’ve had a good life.
I been a good husband to my darlin’ wife.
I missed her so since she passed
I’m going to be with her at last.
We had a child, just a sprig of a boy,
And he was all our pride and joy.
But, God took him Home when he was three.
I know he's waiting there for me.
He asked if I was scared of dyin'?
I told him, 'No Sir, I been tryin'.'
I wanted to ask him please to go.
I closed my eye to tell him so.
But, he kept on to save my soul
And I kept on to reach my goal.
Now, 'what is he buzzing in my ears?
Now that I come to die,
Do I view the world as a vale of tears?'
Ah, reverend sir, not I!''
My breathin’ changed , I had no pain,
Back on the path to Home, again.
For there within that cold, dark night
I saw them standin’ in the light.
I felt all warm and filled with love
As they
reached out
from Heav’n, above.

Now that I come to die,
Do I view the world as a vale of tears?'
Ah, reverend sir, not I!''
