In Stars and Ripples

In Stars and Ripples

I sit beneath trees of elm and oak
studying the underside of leaves
caught between rules

of submissive seasons and I stand
below night skies wondering if stars know
they too are merely pawns

in time.... I wade into shallow water
with unsure steps, making ripples,
timid circles reaching, searching

for certainty and I wallow,
mired in quicksand, seeking answers
that will not or should not

be known... and I weep in the
silence, drowning memories caged inside
a grieving soul, a sorrowed heart

that bleeds its torment upon pages
of mismatched words inking your loss
within margins of continuance

but there comes a day
when I will sit beneath a naked tree
upon leaves scattered, crumpled thoughts

strewn about me, colorless yet brilliant
in their observation of time and I
will once again believe

in stars and ripples, understand
their purpose and, in so doing,
discover my own.. I will look

upon a winter sky, breathe the indigo
that shades tomorrow, find
contentment and even acceptance

of unanswered questions... and reasons
why will matter only to yesterdays
when I sat beneath trees and wept
