What They Saw

It began with a soft humming
over sand dunes,
grew louder as it passed by olive groves,
then heard upon the wind down in the valley
where dark shadows
turned the golden earth to mauves.

There were angel voices
singing on the hillside.
The shepherds fell upon their knees in awe.
They hurried to the shed
behind the tavern,
telling everyone they met all that they saw.

And the music was amazing
in the heavens,
in perfect harmony,
needing no words.
No one before or since
has had the pleasure,
except perhaps,
God's other choir,
the birds.
