Wine and Words Unsaid
We sat across a sad and long suffering table
each pushing food around the plate,
in hanging anticipation we might be able
to stage salvation, redeeming love from hate .
Atmospheric participation was conducive,
in the background soft music played.
Why were the words so darned elusive,
the emotions so uncomfortably frayed?
Our eyes met over flickering candles,
uncertain illumination danced in the flames.
We've taken too many wild and chancy gambles,
sharing bewilderment over rules to the games.
We’re hoping the wine will soften the mood
and help shape the words to be said.
Scorned feelings of sacrifice form their own interlude
from which hurtful dialog may be fed.
I try to speak but the words gag in my throat
as your fork tinks on fine china dinnerware.
A single tear forms on your cheek as you emote
but verbalization just dissipates into thin air.
