The Old Stick and Carrot Trick

The carrot dangles, just out of reach.
Is it a tease or a power play?
Shaded in realism, you now beseech
for return of color to the gray.

Stumbles and skinned knees pile up
as thwarted effort go denied.
Like Vesuvius, you're ready to erupt,
moments of solace you'd abide.

These times when the strong prevail
over the hot coals and barbed wire
have you believing your heart can't fail
once its passed on through that fire.

Dangling carrots and blue rejection slips
make toes dig in deeper to the sand.
Belief you can make it won't be eclipsed
as long as the reins are in your hand.

It appears there's a mountain to be climbed
in order to find the fertility you seek.
Breathe deeply; ensure your pump is primed,
Lord's busy looking out for the meek.
