The Forgotten Among Us

Desolate and lonely he walked the city park,
steps unsteady aided by an old rusty cart.
A weather worn bench beckoned, slowly he sat down,
his sad eyes half closed he made nary a sound.
Here he lingered immersed in scents of rain washed air.
The peacefulness he felt within these days so rare.
He savored each quiet moment: eyes filled with tears,
for a brief time he was free from his daily fears.
As twilight fell a songbird trilled. Oh the splendor.
To the lilting sound, his weary soul surrendered.
Like spangled diadems in space soft notes drifted,
this wonder, this aura, like nothing predicted.

They found him next morning curled in forever sleep,
the down and out man whose home was a city street.
