OBLIVIOUS TO THE DEATH

I could not stop my heart from aching.
I could not start a breath worth taking.

So many lonely souls with no one to care...
No one to share a joy or ease a burden.

They are the oft forgotten...sitting in hallways
In the moving chair that holds and binds them.

The loneliness in vacant eyes, the lips that have
Forgotten how to form a smile, the voice that

Crackels with age and the despair resting in
Once-blue eyes, now turned a mottled grey...

Like the somber surroundings in which they
Wait for something they have forgotten.

Surely there must be a better way to treat those
Whose only living 'relative' is one small fish

Swimming in its watery environment...
Oblivious to the death which surrounds him.
