Freedom's Waters

Picture thanks to Jim Smith...

My journey into the Amish world began just as my working life
ceased. My daughter blessed me with four volumes by Beverley
Lewis at Christmas and the immersion commenced.

devout lives of plain people,
determinedly pure,
fancy frills uncoveted.

I hoarded the huge tomes on shelves and in boxes, taking them
with me into my new life; but having to abandon them with
everything else when that new life fell apart. Sad, really, those
characters had become well-loved friends.

now testing freedom's waters,
aging rumspringa,
holding firm to prayer bonnet.

The horse and wagon took me on a ride back to those pleasures,
yearning for the simple life.
