An Elf Tale

.....Merry and Bright set off along the path to Santa’s shop. They were almost late for their toy making shift. Wandering through Christmas Town they had quite forgotten to watch their time.

.....Her copper curls aglow in the soft evening light of the North Pole, Merry turned to Bright, 'We really must hurry or Santa will be angry!' she cried.

.....'Nah,' replied Bright, his cheeks rosy in the brisk air, 'Santa never gets angry, he’s a jolly old elf.' Nevertheless, Bright’s steps quickened and Merry had to trot to keep up with him, tugging her cap down tighter over her delicately pointed ears.

.....They reached the shop just as the Christmas lights came on all over the town and they stopped in awe at the sight. Caught up in the beauty they didn’t hear the door open behind them, and both jumped when Santa spoke.

.....'Come in from the cold Miss Merry, Master Bright! We’ve been worried you’d miss the festivities. We’re having sweet cider and gingerbread to celebrate the wrapping of the last gift!' With that he ushered the two errant elves into the warmth of his shop with a hearty chuckle.

.....All the elves in the town were gathered inside, gaily toasting and dancing with glee – for in just a few days, the boss would fly off and their toys would go to new homes.

.....Merry and Bright were handed mugs of hot cider and the steam curled up ‘round their ears. Mrs Claus passed them gingerbread cookies and hugged them with tears in her eyes.

.....'It’s been a good year – so good in fact, Santa can rest a few days before his ride. It’s thanks to you all who worked so hard and it’s a wonderful present for me.'

.....The party went on until late in the night when the elves all went home to their beds. But off in the corner, ‘neath bright sprigs of mistletoe, could be seen our sweet Merry and Bright.

Merry Christmas everyone!
