Grandpa's Christmas Gift
Growing up in a large family was always so much fun|
And we all looked forward to Christmas day,
When we came together at my dadís parentís house
To eat and visit, then down to the basement to play.
After a while grandpa came to the basement door
Calling us upstairs for the highlight of our day,
To share with his grandchildren a very special gift
The memory of which would remain in our hearts to stay.
Grandpa sat at his desk in the living room
Lit up only by a white artificial Christmas tree,
With a wheel turning around and around in front of it
That made the colors change on all its branches oh so prettily.
I and all my cousins waited quietly for him
As we sat on the floor at grandpaís feet,
Anxious to get the Christmas gift
That would make our day complete.
Then he began reciting his poetry
And we were hanging on his every word,
Calling out our favorites
Just dying to have them heard.
His words they floated about the room
In pleasing tones as they reached out to me,
For my grandpa made them come alive
It was his voice that set them free.
These memories still surround me
And fill me with so much love,
That every year on Christmas Day
They are what I find myself thinking of.
It was the gift of words that grandpa shared with us
That opened up a whole new world for me,
Making me think about life, love and the glories of nature
As the truth about them was revealed in all its profundity.
I never was one for chasing rainbows
But I was a firm believer in my dreams,
And figured out that if you added a deadline to them
They were quite achievable it seems.
Since those days with grandpa long ago
I have become an author of my own poetry and books,
But I still canít recite poetry like grandpa did
So I figure, that must be the gene that never took.
