MORTALITY

It was a mortal wound
My naive heart received
When I first discovered
That I had been deceived.

Friends had tried to tell me
Without inflicting undue pain.
Yet, I staggered on, using
My heart, rather than my brain.

I had been taken by surprise,
Seen you as never before.
My eyes witnessed a cheat,
Disguised as someone I adore.

No need for friends to warn.
No longer need for my heartbeat.
No longer can my heart
Pretend to ignore your deceit.

My poor heart is now
Fatally bruised and scarred.
Assuming immortality,
You have taken me off guard.

This awful pain tells me
I will soon surely depart.
With your cheating ways,
You have broken my heart.
