The Edge of Heaven
I’ve been laying here in this beautiful glen|
Playing touch and go with death,
And I’ve been seeing god and his angels too
While I am fighting for every breath.
My friends and I were picnicking
On these very private grounds,
Everyone was playing football
Except for me—
Before the plane came down.
My friends assure me through their many tears
That help is on the way,
But I’m on the edge of heaven now
And their voices seem so awfully far away.
My memories, there are so many
Passing through my mind,
While the fairies are dusting my broken dreams with lace
That I had left behind.
I see and hear the angels just beyond the veil
As they gather all around,
Protecting me with their strong soft wings
While making sweet and lulling sounds.
Then I hear these words, spoken loud and clear,
“This is not your time!”
“You are needed by the one’s you love
And others too, you’ll find”.
I am awakening in this hospital bed
Not yet breathing on my own.
And there’s a group of people around my bed
They are my family and friends alone.
The nurse comes in to kick them out
As my angels reappear,
I begin to think I’m dreaming this
For the edge of heaven is right here.
I see images of my childhood
They are filling up my mind
Of rainy days and rainbows
And games of every kind.
We played hide and seek in the cornfields
Built our tree forts for the girls and the boys,
We camped out in the back yard
With lots of laughter and so much noise.
We waded in the river
By the meadow in the vale,
We also caught fire flies in the evening
Then sat around a campfire each telling his own scary tale.
I hear a voice out there calling me now
Saying, “Let’s be done with all of this!”
“We’re all tired and waiting for you to come around.”
This was no angel-- just one determined sis.
There will be no more edge of heaven for me
For my heaven is on this earth,
I thank the Lord for each bright new day
And for giving me rebirth.
I only reminisce about the good times now
I have no longing for anything more,
The love of my family and friends is all I need
And the simple pleasures that my future holds in store.
If you wonder about those broken dreams, my friend
There is no mystery here…for with the fairies I did consult,
I am pursuing one with my mighty pen
And you’ve been reading the results!
