If I Only Had Wings

Straight from the heart comes her prayer…
Through crimson lips…soft as down and a voice…of pure gold,
She bows her head in reverence to her all mighty god…
As she asks him to keep her humbled…in the songs she writes
And in the one’s she sings…as the beauty of her stories unfold.

Her name is Caroline…
And she prays the same prayer before each one of her concerts
As well as in the morning before she starts her day,
She also prays for her husband, Ben, and friends to be with her always…
And asks her god to never take their love away.

She was an abandoned child…
Growing up in foster homes since she was ten,
This would explain why she loves so fiercely and is so loyal…
To Ben, and to all those who she has befriended since then.

Caroline and Ben met in the library
Where she came to do research for one of her songs…
She had grown up to be a tall gorgeous golden haired woman…
Having to fight off the male gender by the throngs.

Ben was a retired young business man, whose handsome figure and money
Made it a constant pleasure and annoyance…having to do the same.
His intent in visiting the library was to do research of his own that day,
And when he saw Caroline…he was rendered speechless…
As she took his breath away.

He started to come to the library more often
To research charities and projects that he was always funding somewhere,
He was also working up the gumption to introduce himself to Caroline…
But, as of yet, she hadn’t given him the satisfaction of eye contact…
Till he ‘accidentally’ fell off his chair.

She looked at him and laughed…
Then offered him a hand…asking him if he was okay…
She knew it was a desperate ploy by Ben
As she’d been watching him struggle for days.

He took the opportunity to introduce himself,
But Caroline just smiled and waved him away…
“I know who you are.” she said…
I checked you out after that very first day.

Your name is Ben…you are a self-made millionaire…retired at forty-one
You spend a lot of time funding charities and projects you believe in,
You are considered to be quite the catch by the powers that be
And also a man who is very thorough…
So, I’m sure that you already know everything there is to know about me.”

He smiled sheepishly, feeling like a school boy
He whispered, “Yes, I probably do…
But, Caroline, if you allow us to start over again
By sharing dinner with me…I promise, I’ll make it up to you.”

She was quiet for a moment…looking into his pleading baby blues
Then said, “What the heck…I like what I do know about you,
It’s just dinner…I’m free tonight…
And I’m expecting that you are too?”

His smile was contagious as he told her,
“Yes, Ms. Caroline…at least I am for you.”
That ‘non-date’, was the first of many
As it went from friendship to lovers…
And finally…to a marriage that is solid and true.

Since then, Caroline’s passion for life and music shines brighter…
For she is blessed with an inner and outer beauty that draws you in,
And when she sings, it is not only with her heart, but with her whole being…
An experience of love and joy…that will not only fill you up,
But will have you begging for more once you begin.

She and Ben have always been enamored by the beauty of the ocean
They love how the waves playfully tease the shore,
The same waves that had the power to calm them and bewitch them…
A power that would inspire Caroline, in her writing even more.

Lately though, those relaxing sounds from the ocean
Didn’t seem to allay her fears and she doesn’t know why…
She doesn’t sleep much…and when she does…
She only has more dreams…some of which make her cry.

In her dream tonight, she brings forth bits and pieces of an old song she wrote,
A song that she vaguely remembers, and doesn’t quite understand…
Why is it resurfacing in her dream and what message is it trying to give her?
This old song…Caroline remembers, was entitled, ‘If I Only Had Wings.”
Written while playing in her very first band.

In her dream she remembers…

“I am sitting down to relax, my Lord…along this shoreline here…
And I’m praying to you to send me…someone special to love,
Someone kind and gentle, Lord…whose passion for this life is clear…
Chosen by you and sent to me from your heavenly home above.”

“And I am thinking, Lord…if I only had wings to fly…
I’d fly them all around the world
And one sweet day…I’d find my true love…pledging to love him till I die…
Then we’d fly away, fly away together…on the wings of a butterfly.”

“And for however long we’d have with each other, Lord…
I would be happy…because his love from you would be beyond compare…
I would be so very grateful too…
Knowing that you had listened…and answered my humble prayer.”

“And we’d fly away, fly away together…
On the wings…of a butterfly…”

Then she awakens with a start…
Heart pounding in her chest,
She thankfully finds her true love still lying beside her…
As she quietly sheds her happy tears of relief…
So as not to disturb him while he rests.

Caroline kisses him softly on the cheek
And begins to contemplate her dreams,
Thinking she now understands about the fear
And that it is not as complicated as it seems.

She is thinking it’s because she feels fortunate to be married to Ben…
The most loving and patient man that she has ever known…
Then Ben wakens…pulling her close to him and kisses her softly back…
She begins to tell him what the dream of the song has shown.

He gets out of bed and goes to the closet
Returning with something he hands to her to read,
It is the song she remembered in her dream,
She reads it and her eyes tear up as she asks where he got it,
“From you...after we had been ‘non-dating’ for a few months it would seem.”

She laughs and says, “That’s when I knew I was in love with you.”
“And I you, sweet Caroline, but of this I was not aware…
Till you told me that you didn’t need the prayer/song anymore
Now that you were sure god had sent me to you…in answer to your prayer.”

He then promises, “I will always love you, Caroline…
And I will never leave you.” As he holds her tenderly in his arms,
Then kissing her neck…he attempts to seduce her,
But Caroline only smiles at his manly charms.

For it is time to tell Ben her wonderful news,
She brushes back his wavy black hair and kisses him sweetly saying,
“We’re finally pregnant, Ben.”
They hug each other for a good long while …crying a little…
Then they stop to thank their god for blessing them again.

Carolyn speaks about her fear, as a tear rolls down her cheek…
“I think that god’s giving us this child is what has made me fearful today.”
“He has already given me so much in your love and now this child…
I feel forever blessed, yet know that I have much more to lose, this way.”

Ben pulls her close and kisses her lips, then reassures her,
“Carolyn, you deserve all the love god gives you in this life and more
Your being abandoned in your youth was not about you being undeserving,
It was not about you at all...that was between your parents and god…
When it comes to you…I’m excited to think about what else god has in store.

With a lighter heart, Caroline flashes Ben a glowing smile
And snuggles up into the warmth of his body too…
As he takes her to a place where everything is beautiful…
And fills her with the deepest love and passion that her heart ever knew.
