Shy kangaroo swiftly bounds away
when I near the lake at break of day.
On seeing me, ducks, gathering know
I've bread for them, it is ever so.
First Chinese whites, a matching pair.
They're synchronized and sweetly share
with black ducks wearing Zorro masks,
while high in a tree koala moon basks.
Then plump wood-ducks honk and hiss
as do geese and muscovies, believe me on this!
Mallards and hybrids with colours all crazy
exit the lake, morning misty and hazy.
Water hens with powerful claws
'I want what is yours!'
A flock of swallows skims over the water
catching insects as swallows ought to.
Noisy miners dart swiftly and tweet,
snatching bread from under ibis' feet.
Overhead soar white cockatoos
screeching out their latest news.
Tiny crested pigeons dance,
they're courting, taking every chance.
Watching them all from the bank of the lake
blinks water dragon, barely awake.
What a marvelous way to start my day
....wouldn't have it another way.
