BUT A DREAMER

‘Have pleasant dreams this night.’
My Mother uttered in the dark
Those same words night after night
With a forehead kiss, her hallmark.

Were my dreams to be pleasant?
Many were, while some I feared.
I often dreamed of rainbows
But, scary things sometimes appeared.

Were those scary dreams at night
To balance what I would recall?
Would pleasant dreams prevail
Or, would they be my downfall?

As has been done through time,
While young, I feared the darker dreams.
Yet, with age, the knowledge came
That, not all dreams are as they seem.

So many times down through the years,
After turning out the light,
I have reminded myself,
‘Have pleasant dreams this night.’
