Grandpa and Me
I hold his hand as he lays here sleeping in this hospital bed|
And I begin thinking back to when I was just a child,
Of the hugs and kisses grandpa showered on me…
And of the many times he rocked me in his arms…
Till my tears were all gone and I had smiled.
My eyes get misty as I touch the locket around my neck
I take it off…open it…and there we are…grandpa and me,
He gave it to me on my sixth birthday…
Making me happier than I could ever be.
Two peas in a pod were we…for I was always by his side
We walked through fields laughing as we named the trees,
And I helped him plant petunias along the fence row
So he wouldn’t have to spend so much time on his knees.
I knew he loved all of his grandchildren just the same
And I had no problem with that,
But when it was our time to be alone together
Nothing else mattered except our little chats.
Grandpa is a fighter, yet he seems so awfully weak now…
And the doctors say it doesn’t look good,
I was told father Joe gave him his last rights this morning
Apparently, grandpa asked him if he would.
I was hoping God would allow me more time with Pum, Pum
After all, he was only seventy-five,
Our Gina would be born in a couple of months
In need of her great-grandpa’s love, hugs and kisses to thrive.
I am clutching to my keepsake locket as he wakes up…
Whispering, “I love you pumpkin.” while squeezing my hand,
“I love you too Pum, Pum.” I tell him...my eyes full of tears…
Then, he closed his eyes with a peaceful smile on his face…
And went into the heavens to be with grandma...
To stay forever and always...in God’s promised land.
