The Girl From The Sidewalk

She was standing on the sidewalk
Visiting a mutual friend
I don't remember why I was there
But this encounter I'll never forget

She was surely out of my league
I had never seen her there before
Her beauty made it hard to speak
I fell in love from this day forward

This was way back in high school
Seems like such a lifetime ago
My life was about to change forever
After my nervous voice said hello

We fell in love and then fell away
And sometimes late at night I pray
She'll come back to me someday
The girl from the sidewalk don't know today

I wish I may, I wish I might
Won't every star I see tonight
A million diamonds up above
Shine down on the one I love
The girl from the sidewalk was the one

We have been back together
Several times since then
Bad timing always kept us apart
I fear I'll never see her face again

Other ones have been easy to forget
They never held my heart like she did
I know she's still out there somewhere
The times together were to abridged

The poets have a thousand tales to tell
About the battle for love in life
That didn't seem to work out well
She'll never read these words I write

I wish I may, I wish I might
Won't every star I see tonight
A million diamonds up above
Shine down on the one I love
The girl from the sidewalk was the one

But I always sleep alright at night
Because in my dreams I'll hold her tight
Does the girl from the sidewalk see me still?
I love her now and I guess I always will
