Reflection of the Boy

He walked along silently,
No path to follow,
Just his emotions guiding him,
He stops and looks in the window,
Something he sees reminds him,
His mind re-lives his childhood
Somewhere a siren is wailing,
Snapping him out of his daze

He now focuses on his reflection,
His brow furrows..he sees a boy,
Not the man he was,
The boy is trying to speak,
No words will come,
He asks the boy what is wrong,
The boy just shakes his head,
Then disappears

The man walks on,
The cold winter air cutting into him,
Plunging his hands into his pockets,
His left touches on something cold and rough,
Instantly he knows,
He need not remove it, but he does,
The crystal...

He is five years old,
A giant stands before him,
He is saying something,
The boy understands the word 'leave',
The giant presses something into his hand,
He bows his head so the giant doesn't see the tears,
A car horn sounding brings him back to reality

Wipes the tear away with the back of his hand,
He remembers what he has been trying to forget
For 20 years..
He shakes his head and walks on,
'He will not do this' he shouts,
People stop and look, shake their heads and whisper,
He doesn't notice them, nor would he care if he did,
'I will forget you, I promised Mother' almost pleading.

He stopped again and looked in the window,
Seeing the man this time,
The black eyes that looked back were the giants,
The heritage,
The strong jaw and cheekbones,
He looks away....
'I may be of his blood, but I am not him' he roars.

He turns on his heel and runs blindly,
His anger, sadness and humility fueling him,
Until he finally ends up by the water,
He collapses on the sand and cries helplessly

Hours pass and the man sits in silence now,
He nods and smiles...he knows,
His left hand closes around the crystal,
Closing his eyes he holds it briefly over his heart,
His arm jerks back then forward, hurling the crystal into the ocean,
Liberated once and for all...
Goodbye Father...
