Kleenex Comes Home
From the roost on shelftop,
Proud fronds of paper claw
Excitied by the indoor breeze
As you walk through the door.

Pick me! Pick me!
Little hearts cry out,
I'm tough and soft, man-size!
Oh, won't you pull me out?

I long to hug your tender nose
And trumpet loud and long
As you let me play your song
On flu viruses so strong!

The faintest sniffle sends a shiver
Down the papery spine:
She's soon be off and sneezing,
And glory will be mine!

There's a slow motion quality
As that great moment comes:
The eyebrows twitch, the fingers itch,

And the nose ...runs!

Clapsed in speedy, needful love,
You pull the tissue free,
And as you drain his life away
Your sneeze he longs to see;
Just before the impact
As you toss him in the bin,
You can hear
- faint, soft and man-sized -
His exultant call

'She picked me!'
