A Soldier's Love

Fighting day by day,
sleeping 3 hours a night
to him the world is a stage
on which he suffers constant fright

the guns all blasting
the cannons blow
a letter from his wife
to be read down low

he quickly writes back
his helmet a shell
'with love' he seals it
although he's in hell

through the door he goes
dropping the letter in the mail
a gun shoots off
and they hear him wail

another letter home
is destined to sail
'I'm sorry ma'am'
approaches a man through the hail

your husband is dead
shot down by the gun
I'm terribly sorry
for all the missed fun

the wife will never forget
that last day she saw him
now she regrets
not acting on whim

he's gone forever
all thats left is a glove
and a letter, solemnly sealed
'from your sweet soldier, with love'
