County Rest Home

In an old hotel
In a quiet town,
About a hundred people
Live apart from
The warmth of fam'ly
And the renown
Of simple toil --
Each one wishing
To dart about, among
Merry crowds of Christmas
Shoppers and revelers and partyers.

By tinsel, garlands, and lights
The sparseness of the lobby
where each day's length
Gathers them in wheelchairs
And hand-me-down sofas
To numbly watch
Soaps, sports and Survivor,
Is for a season festive.
A church bus comes with carolers,
Souls so happy for
The celebrations
They have earned this trip,
Without the pain
And bother of friendship.
