They Told Me...

They told me that love is being able to let go,
That love is letting the loved one be free.

I tried that.

I let him wander, let him leave.
I let him spin me around and walk away.

It hurt.

But I bore the pain like a medal bright,
I bore it well and smiling.

He laughed.

He saw not the thorns I treaded, my feet bleeding,
He was happy and I pretended I was too.

I wasn't.

But they were right and love was strong,
For what else could it be?

Foolishness.

As the Mermaid danced for her prince, I shall do the same.
Like her too perhaps, I shall pass away softly like foam.
