Little Tin Soldier
She was a darling girl,
the dutiful daughter and the responsible one.
She had no toys,
but no matter - playing was for children.
She never felt lonely,
worrying about others took up all her time.
She was a darling girl,
and one day she found an abandoned tin soldier.
She took it home,
cleaned the dirt off him and oiled up his joints.
She cared for him,
dotted in his eyes and found him a polished hat.
She was a darling girl,
and he was a broken little soldier.
She wanted to keep him,
but he seemed so out of place in her perfect room.
She didn't care,
she knew he was scratched and blemished.
She was a darling girl,
and she loved him for his imperfections.
***
The little soldier was made of tin.
If it could, it would walk away.
It didn't fit in her perfect room.
It didn't have a heart to love her back.
The little soldier was made of tin...
